世界遺産シリーズ　The World Heritage Series

【発行にあたって】

　郵政省では、我が国の自然・文化・産業などを広く内外に紹介するために、動植物・芸術・歴史・文学などをテーマにして、シリーズ切手を発行しています。

　平成5年（1993）に日本で初めて「世界遺産」として登録された「姫路城」「法隆寺地域の仏教建築物」「屋久島地域」「白神山地地域」の4件の文化遺産と自然遺産を題材に、「世界遺産シリーズ」として平成6年（1994）12月から平成7年（1995）11月までの間に全4集8種類の切手を発行いたしました。

　「世界遺産条約」（世界の文化遺産および自然遺産の保護に関する条約）は、世界共通の財産ともいえる貴重な文化財や自然環境を、次の世代に残していくために、1972年に第17回ユネスコ総会で採択されました。日本は1992年に同条約の締結国に加盟。そして、1993年12月に、今回の切手のモチーフとなった4件が登録されました。

　本切手帳は、その歴史的価値や自然の雄大さとともに、それを通じて文化財愛護や自然保護への関心をより高めていただくよう発行するものです。

【Greetings on the Release of Memorial Postage Stamps】

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has been publishing a series of memorial postage stamps on the themes of animals, plants, art, history, and literature. The purpose is to introduce Japanese nature, culture, and industries both in Japan and aboard.
The Ministry released stamps of eight different designs in four series as The World Heritage Series Stamps from December 1994 through November 1995. The stamps covered Himeji-jo Castle, Horyu-ji Temple and neighboring Buddhist architecture, Yaku-shima Island, and the Shirakami-sanchi Heights. These sites were Japan's first natural and cultural assets registered as World Heritage sites.
The World Heritage Treaty signed for the protection of valuable cultural and natural assets worldwide was adopted at the 17th General Assembly of the UN Educational. Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1972. The purpose was to hand down valuable cultural and natural assets to future generations as common international assets. Japan signed the treaty in 1992 and acquired four World Heritage registrations for natural and cultural assets in December 1993 as depicted on the memorial postage stamps. The ministry released the stamps to promote public awareness of the value of these historic and natural assets, and to stimulate public interest in the care and protection of the sites.
